About Me
This website
was created by Valerie Feerer. Valerie was born and raised in
Bellingham, Washington and has had a passion for animals for as long as
she can remember. Throughout her childhood, she interacted regularly
with cats, dogs, rabbits, rats, fish, and other animal species until
she discovered horses at age eight. At that age she began
horseback riding lessons in English, western, and bareback styles of riding
and has since had many
influential equine experiences. Her horse experiences have included helping with
horse camps and lessons, performing barn chores, being a Teen Leader
in the horse division at the Whatcom County Youth Fair, training in
natural horsemanship, trail riding, competitive horse showing, and
work with rescue horses. She currently volunteers weekly with
horses and occasionally helps out at the Whatcom Humane Society.
Valerie stands by her belief
that animals deserve the same respect and
treatment as humans and has been involved in animal rights activism
throughout her high school years. This website is a
result of her latest project to protest the slaughter of horses in North
America. As part of this project, she wrote a paper about the issue,
created a presentation to give to her class about the cruelty of
horse slaughter, and gathered signatures on a petition to support a
bill that would prohibit the transportation of horses over
borders to slaughter houses. She also spoke at her local Rotary Club
about the issue and distributed informational pamphlets around her
community. Valerie hopes this website will serve to inform an even
broader audience and facilitate compassion to strengthen the bond
between humans and horses.
