The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act

The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R.503) "will end the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the domestic and international transport of live horses or horseflesh for human consumption" as described by the Animal Welfare Institute's website.

H.R. 503 was introduced to the House of Representatives on January 14, 2009 and an equivalent bill (S. 727) was introduced to the Senate on March 26, 2009. The H.R. 503 bill was brought forth by Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) and Congressman Dan Burton (R-IN). The S. 727 bill was presented by Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Senator John Ensign (R-NV), with thirteen other sponsers from both parties.

The full text of the bill can be found at http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h503/text.
