The Prevention of Equine Cruelty
Act
The Prevention of Equine
Cruelty Act (H.R.503) "will end the
slaughter of horses for human consumption and the domestic and
international transport of live horses or horseflesh for human
consumption" as described by the Animal Welfare
Institute's website.
H.R. 503 was introduced to the House of Representatives on January 14,
2009 and an equivalent bill (S. 727) was introduced to
the Senate on March 26, 2009. The H.R. 503 bill was brought
forth by Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) and Congressman Dan
Burton (R-IN). The S. 727 bill was presented by Senator
Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Senator John Ensign (R-NV), with
thirteen other sponsers from both parties.
