Installing SpiceFX in Movie Maker 6.0 on Windows 7

Windows Live Movie Maker for Windows 7 is a complete re-write of the Movie Maker program by Microsoft. Windows Live Movie Maker needs more development work by Microsoft before it will become a very useful video editing tool -- or to match many of the key capabilities of prior Movie Maker versions. Windows Live Movie Maker lacks a timeline and also does not accept any add-ons or plug-ins currently (other than for social networking) which greatly limits its potential editing power. Fortunately, Movie Maker 2.6 from Vista is still available from Microsoft, is more powerful than Windows Live Movie Maker, and can be manually installed into Windows 7 easily. Our SpiceFX add-ons (5.0 or later) will then install and work great. The three easy steps for Movie Maker 2.6 are here.

Movie Maker users with a dedicated video card however may prefer to install "the other Vista version" -- Movie Maker 6.0 -- in Windows 7 instead of Movie Maker 2.6. Movie Maker 2.6 and 6.0 are functionally very similar but 6.0 can be a little faster due to its video card support. Note you can keep Windows Live Movie Maker on your computer, if you prefer. It is a completely separate application from the older versions of Movie Maker and is not affected by the below.

1. Download Movie Maker 6.0. Please click here. Then unzip the downloaded archive and double-click the setup.exe file to install Movie Maker 6.0.

2. Make sure your Movie Maker 6.0 folder is properly named. Make sure your Movie Maker folder in c://Program Files/ (or c://Program Files x86) is named simply "Movie Maker" -- NOT "Movie Maker V6" or anything else like that. Next, make sure there is a "Shared" subfolder within the Movie Maker folder. And last, make sure there is a "AddOnTFX" subfolder within the Shared subfolder.

3. Now install SpiceFX. Install our demo or purchased version. If you bought a SpiceFX upgrade from us, you will need to install your older SpiceFX version first -- just so it will be seen by the SpiceFX upgrade installer. The older version will then be automatically removed by the upgrade.
